ESPN World Cup Ads: Group D

To promote the coverage of this year’s World Cup, ESPN and their ad agency Wieden+Kennedy commissioned the South African artist collective AM I  Studios to create 32 posters depicting the 32 countries participating in the World Cup.

Australia‘s team is lovingly nicknamed the Socceroos. So logically, midfielder Tim Cahill is depicted as a boxing kangaroo preparing for a corner kick.

Germany‘s Captain, Michael Ballack was injured in the FA Cup Final and as such isn’t participating in the World Cup. However, this doesn’t stop him from being depicted as the German eagle on this poster. Writen on Ballack’s wings are the names of past German greats.

Ghana currently sits atop the Group D standings, despite the loss of star Michael Essien during the 2010 African Nations Cup. Essien is however depicted carrying Ghana’s flag on this poster.

Serbia‘s poster depicts Nikola Žigić who at 6’ 7 & 1/2” is one of the tallest players in the world.

About Michael Darling
