The Wonder Woman of Willendorf

Wonder Woman Day is an annual event in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Every year, comic book artist create unique images of Wonder Woman which are then auctioned off with the proceeds going to fund domestic violence shelters.

For his submission for the auction, artist David Chelsea has taken inspiration from the Venus of Willendorf, a 23,000 year old sculptureĀ  found near Willendorf, Austria in 1908. It is an ancient fertility idol and is considered to be one of the oldest known works of art. Chelsea’s acrylic painting depicts the Venus in Wonder Woman’s classic costume.

For more information on Wonder Woman Day and a look at some of the other works up for auction on October 24th, check out the website here.
