Banksy’s Simpsons Couch Gag

Is there a more iconic television opening sequence than that of  The Simpsons? The sequence starts with a peak through the clouds over Springfield and continues as we watch the Simpsons get home, ending with an often surrealist couch gag. Last Sunday’s episode featured a surprise couch gag created by the mysterious British graffiti artist Banksy. The sequence was a closely guarded secret and was not revealed until the episode aired. It’s not often that The Simpsons does hard social satire, but Banksy creates a dark comic take on the industry behind the creation of the show and Simpsons merchandise. Additionally, this is the first opening title sequence created by an outside artist.
