Beethoven’s Fifth Salsa

Beethoven’s “Fifth Symphony” is one of the more iconic pieces of classical music. As such, musicians throughout the ages have tweaked it and adapted it to a variety of styles. The Electric Light Orchestra interpolated it into their version of Chuck Berry’s “Roll Over Beethoven” and Walter Murphy gave it a disco twist for his “A Fifth of Beethoven.” So, I wasn’t too surprised to find that Sverre Indris Joner has arranged a new salsa version for Norway’s Hovedøen Social Club & Kringkastingsorkesteret. Joner has also arranged several other pieces, including selections from Bizet’s Carmen and Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, in samba and cha cha styles. Those performances can also be found on his Youtube channel.
