The Starburst Prom Dress

In high school, a friend of mine created a chain of connected Starburst candy wrappers as an art project. Well, Tara Frey (seen at right) of River Falls, Wisconsin has done my friend one better. For the past six years, Frey and her mother have been working on a prom dress made out of Starburst wrappers.

Tara’s mother Kerrin Frey had the idea six years ago after watching her friend Joan Doyle folding gum wrappers together. After six failures, Kerrin and her friend Paula Korbel figured out how to put it together. First they fold the wrappers eight times, braid them together, add some hot glue and finally sew them onto fabric to make it durable.

In addition to the dress, Frey has a matching vest, bracelets, earrings, headbands, and shoes. Oh, and what’s going to be the theme of Frey’s high school’s prom? By happy coincidence, Candyland.
