Eddie Izzard and the Death Star Canteen

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Eddie Izzard perform at the Hollywood Bowl and it was amazing. Izzard started the show by running from the Bowl’s stage to the cheap seats in the far back of the bowl. After he returned to the stage and caught his breath, Izzard gave the audience a two hour set of stand-up discussing everything from how Charlton Heston was found guilty in the infamous 1920s “monkey trial” to a giant squid keeping a diary of his time on Noah’s Ark to jazz chickens to Shirley Temple’s attempt to make a film based on the battle of Thermopylae.

During the intermission, Izzard presented several animated shorts which provided visuals for some of his best stand up bits. This included a video for Izzard’s sketch about Darth Vader going to the cafeteria on the Death Star. This clever stop motion Lego animation by youtube user Thorn2200 is pretty fantastic and compliments Izzard’s stand up style perfectly. Check out Izzard’s original performance of the bit from his 2000 concert film, Circle, and then view the lego remix.
