2011 Advent Calendar Day 16: Elton John, “Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher”

This Christmas sees the release of The Iron Lady, a biopic of controversial  former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The Meryl Streep starring film has not been released yet, so we don’t know for sure how they filmmakers will  approach the story of a politician who is both loved and hated to this very day. In the meantime, here’s Elton John performing a demo version of a song he and Lee Hall wrote for the musical Billy Elliot called “Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher.” The musical, based on the film of the same name, tells the story of a young boy discovering a love of dance set against the background of the 1984-85 UK miners’ strike. In the show, “Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher” is performed by the miners and their families as a satirical attack on Thatcher and her opposition to the striking miners.

It’s unlikely you’ll hear this one at any Christmas parties this week.
